ITINERARY
Perched high in the Eastern Andes, Papallacta Pass - Penas Blancas Birding Road offer a spectacular introduction to high-andean birding in Ecuador. At elevations ranging from 3,000 to over 4,000 meters, these two sites are home to a unique blend of paramo and polylepis forest habitats. Birders can expect thrilling encounters with iconic species such as the Giant Conebill and the Spectacled Bear.
Just below the pass, Guango Reserve is another of our hidden gems with its lush cloud forest and hummingbird feeders, where species like the Sword-billed Hummingbird and Tourmaline Sunangel can be observed. Together, these sites offer one of the richest high-Andean birding experiences in the Ecuador, all within few hours from Quito.

Early in the morning, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Quito and begin our top birding tour to the Eastern Slope Cloud Forest. Our first stop takes us high into the majestic Andes at Peñas Blancas – Papallacta Pass, where we’ll search for three spectacular and rare high-altitude hummingbirds. With luck, we might even spot the elusive Spectacled Bear roaming the paramo mountains.
Target Species: Purple-mantled Thornbill, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Giant Conebill, Tawny Antpitta, Black-chested Buzzard Eagle, Pearled Treerunner, Red-crested Cotinga, Andean Tit-spinetail, Great Thrush, and others.
From there, we continue down through Papallacta Town—famous for its natural hot springs and surrounded by scenic cattle pastures and trout farms—on our way to Guango Reserve. This private birding reserve features several forest trails, waterfalls, and hummingbird feeders. We’ll spend time observing an incredible array of hummingbirds up close, followed by a relaxed walk along the trails in search of mixed flocks, mountain-toucans, and other cloud forest specialties.
A delicious lunch will be served at Guango Lodge. In the afternoon, we return to Quito, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel.

Target Species: Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Masked Trogon, Andean Potoo, Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan, Andean Guan, Slaty-backed Chat-tyrant, Mountain Cacique, Turquoise Jay, Tourmaline Sunangel, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Andean Guan, Collared Inca and others.

2025 – Birding Report Ecuador: BRILLIANT BIRDING!
"We enjoyed a wonderful three week trip to Ecuador, experiencing over 500 species as we travelled from Quito to the Mindo area and then east through a variety of elevations and forests until seeing the Napo river region of the Amazon. Fantastic birds and Harpy Eagle! An awesome enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides, Miguel, Carlos, and Marcelo. Looking forward already to return to enjoy great birding. The lodges were all excellent and great food." Ken from Australia
2025 – Birding Report Ecuador: An extraordinary memorable experience
"I participated in a 3 week experience organized with Diego and Ecuador Birding Tours. The trip was well planned and I loved the Condor lookout where there have identified 48 perching sites and we counted six birds flying. I liked how they partnered with other local residents to see their hummingbirds and ant wrens, toucons etc and the choice of hotels was first class. Diego is committed to reforestation and protecting the environment. It was a memorable trip thanks to Diego and Birding Ecuador" Diane from Australia

"Amazing trip set up by Diego, I did four days of "Hummingbirding" and saw 38 species of hummers. The food was delicious with good sized portions at the lodges and at the restaurants we stopped at for lunch along the way. Overall a great experience with Ecuador Birds tours and I'm already booking my next trip to return only 7 weeks after I left Ecuador on the first trip. I highly recommend Ecuador Birds Tours! 2025 – Birding Report Ecuador: Antisana Condor Tower Highly Recommended!
"Excellent couple of day tours booked prior to a trip to the Galapagos. Can not say enough good things about Ecuador Birds Tours. Communication pre, during and post trip with Diego was fantastic. Miguel was an excellent guide and kept an ebird list for the group, allowing us to focus more on the birds and behavior. I cannot wait to return to Ecuador and book a longer tour" Nick Hammil group from USA
