The Andean cock-of-the-rock male has a large disk-like crest and scarlet or brilliant orange plumage, while the female is significantly darker and browner. Gatherings of males compete for breeding females with each male displaying its colourful plumage, bobbing and hopping, and making a variety of calls. This act is what we call the Lek of the Andean Cock of the Rock, which occurs only between 545am and 7am. After mating, the female makes a nest under a rocky overhang, incubates the eggs, and rears the young, all by herself.
In our Magic Birding Circuit we have discovered the Andean Cock of the Rock Lek, a tour that starts at 530am - 7am, to observe this iconic specie and hearing a variety of calls to attract the females birds.
You can see this specie in one of our Birding or Photography Tours or if you prefer we have private day tours for this activity.
